Things to do Indoors in Miami

By Kara Franker | Jun 12, 2017

Miami offers plenty of indoor fun.

From museums and theater productions, to art exhibits, indoor sports and more, here are some of the best ways to have fun indoors in Miami.

Visit a Museum

Science aficionados will be excited to explore the newly opened Phillip and Patricia Frost Science Museum in Downtown Miami’s Museum Park. Overlooking beautiful Biscayne Bay, this 250,000-square-foot museum is home to six floors of interactive exhibitions, a lunar terrace with a telescope, a solar terrace with an urban farm, a freestanding planetarium and a 500,000-gallon aquarium.

Take the little ones to Miami Children’s Museum on Watson Island for a schedule of daily programming and entertainment for the whole family, including interactive and bilingual exhibit galleries.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), in Downtown Miami is as beautiful as it is informative. Home to sprawling collections of 20th- and 21st-century art, this 200,000-square-foot museum hosts weekly jazz and wine nights and features a popular waterfront restaurant.

The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami includes classic collections, from permanent Italian Renaissance and Baroque exhibits, to those reflecting the Greco-Roman Antiquities and Native American art. Browse works by modern artists like Dale Chihuly, Richard Jolley and William Carlson.

Founded in 1963, The Bass Museum of Art, on Miami Beach, is home to the personal contemporary art collection of art collectors John and Johanna Bass. After a long-awaited transformation, it reopens to the public on October 8, 2017. A new gallery will be dedicated to displays of the museum’s permanent collection, featuring a series of rotating artist projects.

History buffs will love HistoryMiami with its exhibitions, collections and publications that tell the story of Miami and the greater South Florida area. As a Smithsonian affiliate, it is currently the largest history museum in the State of Florida and is located Downtown.

Catch a Show

Located in Downtown, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts is home to the Ziff Ballet Opera House, Knight Concert Hall and Carnival Studio Theater. Watch a Broadway-style show, see a performance by the Miami City Ballet or check out the live music offerings like the New World Symphony or the Florida Grand Opera.

Originally built in 1950, The Fillmore Miami Beach underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2007. Today this venue regularly showcases live entertainment like Phoenix, Bill Maher, Pink Floyd and the Russian Ballet, just to name a few.

Perfect for families, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre showcases a year-round calendar of musicals, dramas and children's programs in Coral Gables.

Miami Children’s Theater is perfect for theater lovers of all ages. It is located in Kendall, a neighborhood in the southern part of Miami. At this one-of-a-kind theater, professional actors teach children how to produce, choreograph and star in their own productions, which are open to the public to enjoy.

For a different kind of movie day, enlighten yourself with an independent or international film at one of Miami’s art cinemas. O Cinema, in Wynwood, is a popular venue for first-run independent, foreign, art, and niche market films.

In Coral Gables, the 141-seat Coral Gables Art Cinema sits in a Mediterranean-style building and showcases screenings of international and American cinema and classic films. It also hosts special events, visiting filmmakers and more.

In Little Havana, Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater is a historic icon in Miami. Originally built in 1926, it is currently managed by the InterAmerican Campus of Miami Dade College and showcases a regular series of multicultural films, live performances, and cultural and educational programs.

More Fun Ideas

There are plenty of ways to stay active indoors in Miami. Go rock climbing at XTreme Rock Climbing. Soar through the air at Sky Zone Miami, where adults can play dodge ball or basketball on trampolines. Or find your inner Zen by taking a class at one of Miami’s many yoga studios.

For a fun activity with loads of style, take a drive down Collins Avenue and go to Basement at The EDITION, at the EDITION Miami Beach. This underground hangout is more than your everyday lounge and nightclub—it has an ice-skating rink and a bowling alley, live DJs, a mini arcade, and like all nightlife in Miami, beautiful people watching.

For indoor shopping, mega malls like Dadeland Mall and Dolphin Mall are packed with everything from small kiosks and moderately priced stores to department stores and high-end designer boutiques.

In addition, Miami has plenty of open-air malls (with indoor, air-conditioned shops) that are as beautiful as they are an ideal location for a shopping spree. Browse through the shops at Lincoln Road Mall, the Shops at Merrick Park or the highbrow Bal Harbour Shops, or grab a bite to eat at one of their many stylish cafes.
